Disliking a recent portrait by David Wilkie, Robert Cadell commissioned this portrait in March 1830, planning to have it engraved to accompany a volume of the Magnum Opus edition of the novels (see #MAG0065). (See Russell, Francis, 'Portraits of Sir Walter Scott' (London: White Brothers, 1987), Item 55, pp.40-41) (Another engraving of the same portrait, by Henry Robinson, appears as the frontispiece to vol. 1 of the Fisher edition of the Waverley Novels. See #FIS0001).
