Notes: Depicts Charles II, as a visitor at Tillietudlem, with doffed hat, holding the hand of and moving as if to kiss Lady Bellenden, who half turns her face away, with two female attendants behind the breakfast table in the background [Ch. 17]. Scott's original text refers to 'two buxom serving-wenches . . . elevated for the day into the capacity of waiting gentlewomen' [EEWN 4b, 19.14-15]. Also appears in 'The Waverley Album' (London: Charles Heath, [1832]), facing p. 15 (see image). Imprint of Hurst, Robinson, & Co., London (the secondary publishers on title-page). Vol. also includes title-page vignette of Bothwell Bridge, as in vol. 11 of 1821 12mo issue, but with engraver given as Charles Heath.
