Notes: Depicts a man horseback with sword and shield, riding towards a town and bridge in the distance, with a winding river on the plain below, and two pilgrim-like figures and stone cross nearby. Matches the view of the valley of the Tay outlined in Ch. 1 (EEWN 21, 12.27-30), though the figures in the illustration are historical. Illustration title given as 'vignette of a city' in Todd & Bowden 282A. Also appears in 'Tales and Romances of the Author of Waverley' [8vo issue], 7 vols (Edinburgh: Robert Cadell, 1833), vol. 9. Also resembles vignette in Magnum Opus edition, vol. 42, #MAG0084, though engraver there differs.
