Notes: Depicts the Manor Glen, in Peeblesshire, home of David Ritchie, the supposed original of the Black Dwarf in the story. Accompanying quoted text (p. 51[2]), with reference to Magnum Opus edition: 'Ye'll hae heard o' Canny Elshie the Black Dwarf, or I'm muckle mistaen. / Black Dwarf, Vol. IX, p. 3.' See Ch. 1; EEWN 4a, 12. Originally issued as part of a separate number in 1830. Compare Tilt's 'Landscape Illustrations', #LIW0021, also of the Manor Glen, stated to be from a drawing by Skene, and where the composition is similar, though with some differences in representation and detail.
