Notes: Depicts Scott seated with cane in hand with his dog Bran in the bottom right corner; a view of the Eildon Hills is to the left. Disliking a recent portrait by David Wilkie, Robert Cadell commissioned this portrait in March 1830, planning to have it engraved to accompany a volume of the Magnum Opus edition of the novels. (See Russell, Francis, 'Portraits of Sir Walter Scott' (London: White Brothers, 1987), Item 55, pp.40-41). Also appears in the Centenary edition of the Waverley Novels: see #CEN0001. (Another engraving of the same portrait, by Henry Robinson, appears as the frontispiece to vol. 1 of the Fisher edition of the Waverley Novels. See #FIS0001).
