Notes: Portrait of a young Scott by Henry Raeburn in 1808. Depicts Scott seated on a stone under a ruined wall, with a dog at his feet, with Hermitage Castle and the Hills of Liddesdale in the background. See Russell, Francis, ‘Portraits of Sir Walter Scott’ (London: White Brothers, 1987), Item 161, pp. 73-74. No imprint date for this frontispiece, though engraved title-page opposite is dated 1847, while main title-page imprint date is 1843, and that to ‘Waverley’, as the first novel contained, is 1842.
