Notes: Depicts Jeanie Deans seated on a bed holding hands with and comforting her sister Effie in confinement in the Edinburgh Tolbooth, with Ratcliffe the jailer looking on in the background and dangling the keys. Matches #BOR0058, but with different engraver. Accompanying quoted text: ‘Jeanie Deans was admitted . . . at length approached the place . . . touch of human sympathy’ [Ch. 21; EEWN 6, 184-85]. Painting exhibited at Royal Scottish Academy in 1873, inscribed "RH 1872".
